Holiday Celebrations at CHS
by Brian Pau
Regardless of culture or nationality, holidays or celebrations are common for people around the world. Holidays are a time of happiness and joy as both family and friends gather to celebrate them. CHS is no exception and presents many holidays for the students and parents to enjoy. CHS provides a balance, between traditional Chinese holidays and both modern American holidays, providing both a sense of comfort as well as introducing culture to the students.
CHS celebrates a multitude of holidays during the Fall and Winter. In late September to early October, students enjoy sweet mooncakes and traditional lanterns during the Mid-Autumn Festival. On October 31st, students dress up and indulge in varieties of sweet treats during Halloween, and in late December, students will be visited by Santa Claus and receive presents. While students enjoy celebrating these holidays, they continue to learn at the same time! However, since that one holiday is so important, classes are suspended for that day so students may truly enjoy the festivities.
The Chinese New Year celebrations occur throughout that school day. Students get to enjoy games and activities to win prizes, which they get to practice their Chinese as well as learning more about Chinese culture; this is truly a great blend of both education and fun. Students also experience performances from CHS cultural clubs, including but not limited to, Lion Dance, Chinese Yoyo, and the Chinese Dance clubs.
Students and parents both enjoy varieties of festivities and holidays throughout the school year, and CHS continues to offer them memories that they’ll never forget, year after year.
